You can’t fight gravity, but you can make sure you have the facts on sagging facial skin and what you can do about it.

Like many other changes in our bodies, sagging skin is a problem all of us will face as we get older. Dr. Mark Crawford, facial cosmetic specialist with the Aesthetic Center in The Eye Clinic, explains that elastin fibers and collagen in your skin help keep your face smooth and supple. "As you age, those fibers begin to break down, robbing your face of its youthful definition. Skin also renews itself much more slowly as you get older than it once did. As a result of these factors, along with genetics, weight changes, and sun damage over time, facial skin starts to become less firm and resilient, and begins to sag in different areas, often under the eyes and around the mouth, most noticeably.”

Dr. Crawford says while sagging skin is a common concern, misinformation about the causes and cures are even more common. Here’s a closer look at some of these, with the facts to help you minimize the damage and keep your face looking firm.

Running and strenuous exercise causes your face to sag.

Fact. Sagging skin is due to two age-related reasons: loss of collagen, which gives skin its elasticity, and loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes skin to droop. While your whole body bounces up and down while you’re jogging, it’s highly unlikely that you’re damaging collagen. The more likely source of damage is long hours exercising outdoors exposing your skin to harmful UV rays, which, over time, breaks collagen down. Make sure you protect your skin with sunscreen before exercising outside, even in colder weather.

Sleeping on your stomach causes sagging.

False. Your sleep position won’t actually cause sagging, but it can lead to some morning wrinkles and creases caused by your pillow tugging at delicate facial skin as you sleep. When you’re younger, it’s not an issue, as fresh, elastic skin bounces back easily, but as you age, skin becomes less resilient and can settle into these lines. You can avoid this effect by sleeping on your back. There are even special pillows available to encourage back sleep and graded steps to minimize contact between your face and the pillow if you do roll over onto your side.
